This Book = Meh

What drove me crazy about this book is the jumpiness. There were points that drew me in, but then 5 pages later, it was completely different and I was uninterested.

I would have liked more story about what happened with the Mom before the story began. I would have liked a more satisfying ending. I pretty much hated any discussions about the theatre and ended up skipping most of them.

Sorry – On Australia Day

There are a lot of things that I would take back. I have tried to not live my life focused on regret, but there are many things I said that I would take back and many actions I would do differently. Mostly they are things that I said or did to family members or close friends. Some things haunt me to this day. Some things I know that had I done them differently, my life may have turned out differently.

Does that necessarily mean that I did it wrong? No. It just means that as I look back at my life, I see where the path I took may not have been the best path to take, or it was a path that has possibly added to my stress and affected my relationships with others.

Should you live your life with regret? Maybe. To the level that it consumes you day and night? Definitely not. Some would say that you need to seek forgiveness for your actions and move on. While you can seek forgiveness, you still need to accept responsibility for your actions and learn from them.

What’s More Important

saturated writing

At this point in my life, it is both. I like where I live because I am close to family and it would be very difficult for me to raise my kids without my family around. I want my kids to know their cousins, grandparents, aunts & uncles. Yeah, they can get on my nerves at times and sometimes I want to ignore them all and run away, but they are still my family and having lived away from them for a number of years, I am glad I am back.

That being said, without loving what I do, I would be miserable. I have had jobs I liked because of the job, jobs I have liked because of the people and jobs I have had to do to earn money. My current job is the one of the best I have had – for both people and the job. The job I have is the perfect one for me. It uses both of my degrees and has a certain degree of flexibility.

The place I live may not be the most “happening” but it’s a good place to raise a family. The place I live may not have a plethora of good jobs but it has a number of really good companies that people want to work for because they take care of their employees and there is room for advancement. Luckily, I work for one of those companies.

I Loved This Book’s Setting

I will admit, this book (and it’s 2 accompanying sequels) are not for everyone, but they are books that should be read for the pleasure of reading. The contemporary reader will not know the back stories behind some of the names and places, but with a good editor, all of that will will be mitigated.

As you read “The Inferno” (and hopefully “Purgatory” and “Paradise”, you can’t help but be drawn into the pictures that Dante creates with his words. These images have resonated with artists throughout the centuries and even though they are allegorical for the political situation of his time, they are still awe-inspiringly beautiful, terrible, and humbling.

My first job: retail

My first real paycheck was from a discount store (not Walmart). I started out as a cashier and then moved to the bookkeeping department. I started out as a part-timer handling evening reconciliation and eventually worked my way up to managing the department of 5 people.

I lasted 5 years, exactly. While it may not have been my favorite job, it was the one where I met some lifelong friends. Without that job, I wouldn’t have gotten the job after that in a new city. So I am thankful for that.

Would I Survive No Internet for a Whole Month?

You know, I have thought about this off and on. Yeah, 15 years ago, when I was first getting on-line, I could have definitely lived without the Internet for a month. Five years ago, I probably could have made it a month. But over the years, the Internet has become more and more integral to my life – personal and professional. There are friends I have only because of the Internet, and friends from a long time ago that I only am in contact with because of the Internet.

I probably couldn’t go without the Internet for a whole month. Maybe a day or two, but not a whole month at this point. There’s just too much going on, and I really don’t like talking on the phone that much, and as much as I love to write, I don’t really have the time right now to keep up a written correspondence.

That Special Book in My Life

Austen Gray & wife 1913 (LOC)

First of all, I don’t think that it’s just one book. While I don’t typically re-read books, here are a few of my standards.

“Pride & Prejudice” – one of my all-time favorites. Really, anything by Jane Austen will be re-read in my house.

“Outlander” – of course, it helps that my on-line book club re-reads this series every two years or so. What a great book!

“Jane Eyre” – one of my friends reads this book every year or so. I can see why – the reader is continually surprised by the fact that Mr. Rochester has hidden his mad wife in the attic.

Maybe there are books that you read over and over; maybe there are books that stay with you long after you read them; maybe there are books that you wish you had time to read. The secret is making the time to enjoy the written word.

Rolling Back Time

Grandfather Clock Face Waters building EXPLORE 4-8-08 2828

There are a couple of years that I would like to do over, only knowing what I know now. I think that if we had it to do over, we would have listened to those who had been through what we are now going through. However, at that point in our lives, we thought we knew what we were doing and that we didn’t need that help.

The “if only”s can destroy you if you focus on them. Even if you don’t focus on them, each decision irrevocably changes your future. The decision to go left instead of right; to ignore a phone call instead of answering it; to make that one purchase for something you want instead of waiting and buying something you need.

I can’t say that I regret the decisions, I just regret that we didn’t learn the first time around. But if I could redo those couple of years, I would.
